Colour Decorating
Help Your Baby's Development Through The Colour Scheme That You Choose

This page has some colour decorating inspiration to guide you in preparing your baby's nursery.

Take a look at any interior design guide or any paint brochure and one colour scheme will leap out at you.

Pastels. Pale yellow, cornflower blue and pink predominate. But is traditional best?

Many prospective parents choose these shades because they create a homely and calm atmosphere. Anxious to welcome the new arrival, they assume that pastels are the best way to do this.

And they'd be right. But at the same time, completely wrong.

What's going on? Let's look at some facts about baby development to understand things a bit better.

How A Baby's Vision Develops
A newborn is born with far from perfect vision. At birth, everything is indistinct - your baby can detect light, blurred shapes and movement - that's about it. However, within a few days they will be able to discern the human face  - indeed it fast becomes their favourite thing to look at.

A close second is any high contrast pattern (did you know that the best soft toy for a new arrival is a panda?). This makes sense - they are easier to distinguish for the visually challenged litttle one. By the age of 2 months, along with their improving eyesight, infants are starting to develop a marked preference for primary colours.

Bold & Lively Colours
What does this mean for baby nursery decoration? Just this: include some high contrast visuals in your nursery - black and white, or black and yellow/orange are most important earlier on. Bold, lively bright colours come to the fore pretty soon. It makes sense to plan the bright colours, and have on hand some black and white items such as fabric books and monochrome soft toys.

So are pastels out?

How To Use Pastels
In a word, no!  A smorgasbord of monochrome and/or primary colours in your baby nursery room is not desirable. This is still the place where your little one not only sleeps, but bonds with you during feeding times. The decor must be restful as well as stimulating, for you just as much as your bundle of joy.

The answer is to create a nursery colour decorating scheme that is restful and calm, one that you like. Use this as the backdrop for bold, fun and vibrant designs such as our murals. Not only do these appeal to baby's developing vision, but they provide ample story-telling opportunities, numerous chances for you to bond further, and later on help develop those budding language skills as your baby becomes a toddler.
